One of the first intentionally developed Doodle types, the Labradoodle is widely known as an active, social, trainable companion. Individual coats and temperaments vary.
Lineage And Recognition
Commonly used name for Labrador Retriever x Poodle. It is not an AKC-recognized breed and does not have one universal breed standard. Parent choice, Poodle variety, generation, genetic assortment, rearing, and training can produce wide variation.
Typical Size Notes
Breeder-specific and not standardized. The Labrador Retriever reference is 55-80 lb; recognized Poodle varieties range from about 4-6 lb Toy Poodles to 40-70 lb Standard Poodles. Use both parents' measured adult sizes and past litter data, not the Doodle name alone.
Lifespan Guidance
No reliable cross-wide lifespan standard. Parent references are 11-13 yr for Labrador Retriever and 10-18 years across Poodle varieties. Individual health and body size matter.
Coat Notes
Possible inheritance includes the Labrador Retriever's short dense double coat and the Poodle's dense curly coat. An individual may be straight, wavy, or curly and may retain undercoat. Furnishings and curl do not prove a non-shedding coat.
Shedding And Allergy Notes
Variable. The Labrador Retriever benchmark is high, while Poodles are low-shedding. Littermates can differ, and no Doodle should be promised as shed-free or allergen-free.
Energy Level
Parent benchmark: High. Usually moderate-to-high. Daily walks, training, play, and mentally purposeful activities are likely to suit many individuals.
Temperament
Possible tendencies from Labrador Retriever ancestry include outgoing, friendly, active, biddable. Poodles are active, responsive, versatile sporting dogs. These are tendencies, not promises.
Grooming Considerations
Plan on thorough brushing and combing several times per week, often daily for a long or dense coat, plus professional grooming about every 4-8 weeks depending on coat and clip. Check ears, nails, teeth, eyes, skin, feet, and friction areas routinely. Double-coated ancestry can create dense undercoat beneath furnishings, so combing to the skin matters.
Trainability
Often capable of learning quickly, but intelligence is not automatic compliance. Reinforcement history, motivation, sensitivity, independence, and inherited working instincts all affect training.
Original Parent Function
Retriever, service, and sporting dog
Management Considerations
No special cross-wide flag beyond individual assessment, training, grooming, and parent-specific health screening.
Health Watchlist
Potential inherited concerns come from both sides. Labrador Retriever watchlist: Hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, exercise-induced collapse, CNM, cardiac concerns. Poodle risks vary by size and include orthopedic, eye, patellar, thyroid, sebaceous adenitis, cardiac, and PRA concerns. Crossbreeding does not automatically remove inherited risk.
Breeder Health Testing
Verify public, identity-linked results for both parents. Labrador Retriever: Hips, elbows, ophthalmologist, EIC DNA, CNM DNA. Poodle testing must match the exact Toy, Miniature, or Standard variety. A generic DNA panel is not a substitute for hips, elbows, eyes, cardiac, patella, or other phenotype testing when required.
Research Note
Included in the 2024 RVC VetCompass comparison of designer Poodle crosses and their parent breeds, which found broadly similar disorder risk across most comparisons rather than a consistent health advantage. Also included in a 2026 RVC behavior study that found no across-the-board behavioral advantage.
Competition Eligibility
Eligible for the All Doodle Breeds Division. Final event rules and division placement apply.
